Starfield

Shhh, just let it happen

Watching the videos for like the 4th time (I’m home recovering from surgery, what else am I going to do?) I realized something about myself and my relationship with SC. Way back when, when I first backed, the idea of “no RP elements” appealed to me, but I realize now that it really doesn’t. Comparing the 2 games, the very things that make them completely different are the things I like about Starfield.

  • SC is multiplayer - I really don’t like people anyway. What little value they add is vastly over-written by the pain they cause, unless it’s in controlled doses, like Diablo IV where I choose how they get to interact with me.
  • RP Elements - Turns out, I really, REALLY like those things. Perks, talents, skills, levels, etc. They’re fun and add variety during playthroughs.
  • NPC/Story-driven content - I respect the hell out of TZ, but there is zero chance the PU is going to have 10% of what Bethesda can bring to this table, the skill/experience disparity is just too great. And this is my meat and potatoes. Sure, CR/TZ say “90% NPCs”, but they just mean dumb bodies to stand in the way, get bad pathing, and annoy PvP players. Because Bethesda can’t rely upon players using each other as content, they actually have to write engaging stories, and as much as CR has said that he plans no running SC for 10 years (over 10 years ago), I expect Todd actually means that. With space, DLC’s and expansions are super easy.

IMHO, Starfield is the game SC should have been, and when it launches it’s going to become a major thorn in SC/CIG’s side be the comparisons are going to be inevitable. Now, when TZ adds NPC crews, they better be as good as SF’s, or why bother? NPC missions? Better be at least as good as SF’s side missions. Crafting? Better be as good as SFs. Ship building? Yeah, can’t build ships in SC. Base building? Super expensive in SC, super easy in SF. Etc.

I don’t envy CIG in Sept, and am actually quite excited for Oct’s CIG Con update.

I agree with you all around. I prefer my multiplayer to be co-op in regards to MMO’s and non-MMO’s, don’t care much for PvP at all. I would prefer RP elements as opposed to no RP elements. I have to wonder myself how much actual story content is going to be in Star Citizen PU and how much is actually going to be mission-terminal type stuff and/or ‘open world sandbox make you own adventures’ type of stuff, because I find the latter tends to get even more repetitive than the former.

And in the end, I feel like we are going to be playing Starfield well before we see anything concrete out of Star Citizen in regards to Squadron 42 or the non-alpha PU.

That last part is the most important to me…because SF comes out first, it becomes the measuring stick, and the modding community is going to go to town with it. 1000s of worlds across 100s of systems and multiple story-driven plots? But what about “space is big, we can’t write that much content?” Everything SC announces is going to be answered with “SF already did it”.

One thing I did notice…absolutely no ground vehicles in SF. None. Not even in the background. I think that will need to be addressed. It doesn’t necessarily need to be “tonks”, but at least speeders or trucks. I see that as a gap. I think that they’re missing because, unlike SC’s “the entire world is explorable”, the SF worlds are only explorable in “chunks” that may not require a vehicle. That and it has fast travel. But still, if they don’t add it, modders will.

Check out the vague Trek reference!

I’ve also put Star Field in the pre-order. The first game I’ve pre-orderd in years.
Thanks guys for putting it on my radar again.

But, but…I thought you loved me?

LOL

You’re not “people”

Not going to pre-order, I have game pass. I would say that I am cautiously optimistic. The less I see of Todd Howard, the more optimistic I get.

Fallout 76 hurt you badly, didn’t it?

There is a new Fallout? Wow, let me loo

/REBOOT

I love Todd. When FO76 was announced, I watched Todd standing there, soul less, pitching this monstrosity that he was forced to do, and all I could think of was “Oh Todd, show me on this doll where your publishers touched you to make you do this.” FO76 was everything he said it was, and I knew the moment he started talking that it wasn’t for me, and I was right. I got it on Steam for like $15, played it for 20 or so hours to give it a good, solid chance, then uninstalled, knowing I was right. In the overall arc of BGS, I simply don’t count FO76, kind of like, when I’m counting the women I’ve had in my life, there are a couple that I skip over, because even I don’t want to admit I stooped that low.

So BGS for me is Daggerfall, Morrowwind, Oblivion, Skyrim, FO3, FO4, which is a perfect track record as far as I’m concerned

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about this game for a few weeks now. Every time I reach for my wallet, a little voice says "Wait, it’s not really time sensitive. " I’ll probably get it, but I can wait on more information to come out. 2 trailers aren’t really enough.
I’ve preordered a few games…EQ, WoW, Wildstar, Star Citizen(don’t remind me). They’ve all seemed like I needed to get in there when the doors opened. This game, no so much. Maybe SC has caused a reaction to buying something on the first day or before the first day.
Will just have to wait and see.

I was ok with FO76 until the base looting started. There was no way for us to have someone there 24/7 to keep it intact. I eventually gave up on the base option and soon after that my friends and I found other games to play. The same thing happened to us in Conan. They’re both ok games (if you don’t sleep).

I’m pretty stoked for Starfield. I, like a few others here am a bit leery of pre-ordering. Just waiting for Todd to jinx it. We all know it will happen.

This does look pretty nice. Kind of got away from Space games when SC didn’t pan out and Elite Dangerous got dull (before they updated it) only concern I have is internet connection. I’m in the country so have low connection rates and tend to stay away from games that have to constantly download and update while playing. This seems to be more along the lines of it downloads updates and your basically playing from your computer not online.

Is that the case?

Starfield is a single player game so there shouldn’t be any online requirements.

Well…even single player games seem to require some level of being online these days, but it certainly won’t be an online game. And at 125gb download, it sure seems to have all it needs locally.

Thats my hope, I play Icarus and every week theres a download ranging from a few hundred Mb to a couple of GB depending on the update size but as for gameplay it was never having to download anything during the game.

BGS games bloat, so make sure you have hard drive space. And this guy is procedural, which means it has to remember all of the seeds and decisions in the saves. Plus mods. I’m setting aside like 300gb for it, personally.

I’m looking froward to Starfield as well. I haven’t done much gaming lately, and I think Starfield will get me back into it. I’d like to know about the flight model for the ships in Starfield. I’d love it if a HOTAS could be used, but I’m thinking it will probably be mouse and KB only.

Every trailer/interview I’ve seen indicates the model is “fun”, not “sim”, “Hollywood”, not “reality”. It’s Bethesda so expect closer to Star Wars than Expanse. Not saying bad or good, it’s just the vibe I’m getting.
