[Finished] SF - Horizons of the Vast AP (Sundays, 8-11 EDT)

How exactly would the Spy specialization for Operative work with a Sklittermander in regards to disguises? I suppose I could just dye my fur or get some sort of device that makes my fur look a different color and impersonate some other random or well-known Skittermander.

Not that I would go the Spy specialization for this AP, I would totally go Thief specialization as it fits the character more.

I think I have my character nailed down, Iā€™ll debut him later tonight. All Skittermander, all grifter, all operativeā€¦all little scoundrelly shit.

Either that or Iā€™ll end up completely switching and playing a Dromada operative that is equal parts Scooby Doo, Jar Jar Binks and Inspector Clouseauā€¦with a dash of Dr. Zoidberg.

One way or another Iā€™m playing an Operative; either itā€™s gonna be comic mischief Operative or comic goofy Operative. But each one has a character themed reason for being an Operative other than just being an Operative.

What fresh hell is this?! @Rando got me wanting to watch The Abyss again (special edition of course) and there is nowhere to rent The Abyss Special Edition for streamingā€¦ARGH. FMLā€¦ :smirk:

Tee hee. The Prof assigned it as homework and canā€™t find it either!

Well the normal edition was on Amazon Prime and that is the one I watched. I was OK with that as the special edition was not specified on the homework list. And I had forgotten there was a special edition Until Ryu mentioned it.

Mith

I tried to watch the normal edition on Amazon Prime tonight, but UGGGGHHHHH! It is letterboxed in 4:3 format with the black bars on sides and the resolution looks to be about VHS quality. I couldnā€™t watch it. And it seems the rights to The Abyss are in legal hell or some such so no chance of seeing the special edition at this point and not gonna see it on blu ray anytime soonā€¦and James Cameron is too busy with the Avatar sequels right now to bother with poor ole The Abyss.

I have my character. Not gonna do the Skittermander. Iā€™m going with Dromada Operative with the Prole theme and not gonna tell what my background is.

Name: Maelchi Van Tennjic (pronounced Male-shi Van Ten-jik)
Race: DROMADA
Class: OPERATIVE

Maelchi left home early in his life to escape the herd-life of his people, the Dromada. Dromatia, the homeworld of the Dromada, is a planet with numerous predator species, many of them quite large. The Dromada were the favorite prey of these various predators for much of the Dromadaā€™s history and as a result of this they developed a herd-like culture for protection along with incredible bursts of speed as a means of escape. These traits carried over as the Dromada evolved and their society progressed and the herd-like tendencies are evident in various elements of Dromada culture.
Maelchi hated this, he hated feeling weak and scared as was ingrained into the heritage of his people. He hated that his peopleā€™s best defense always seemed to be running and hiding in a big group. He spent a lot of time learning anything and everything he could to take his mind off the shifts between stress and humdrum of the Dromoda lifestyle So he left home at an early age (perhaps too early, Dromada donā€™t live very long) and he had plenty of struggles and misfortunes in the years after he left his homeworld, being young and naĆÆve. He found that being skilled at a lot of different things (as well as being really fast) was a good way to be useful to whomever he might be working for at any given time so he used this to his advantage whenever he could, but not at the expense of friends, companions or co-workers.
Eventually Maelchi came to work for the Evgeniya-Jaimisson corporation to make use of his various skills and abilities. He is a hard worker and is quite competent with a variety of skill knowledge and ability. He like to fill in wherever needed without overshadowing the specializations of others. Maelchi also has a roguish nature that he often falls back on with a bit of a hard sarcastic edge to him at times. He is not very forthcoming about his past to those he doesnā€™t know very well. If ya wants those deets then we need to buddy up somehow. Maelchi is curiously knowledgeable about certain illicit activities and he also can be very very fast at times and sneaky, he makes a good scout and infiltator when needed. Unfortunately for Maelchi, he is a Dromada; in times of great stress or trauma he sometimes loses the constant struggle with his Dromada nature and the skittish fearfulness affects him, causing him to appear awkward and bumbling much to his embarassment. The rest of the time he comes off as a slick badass professional with a cocky roguish streak a a bit of a hard edge who knows his way around the not-so-legal side of things.

Inspirations for this character

See reply to the other Starfinder thread. Connectivity issues with internet cable. Could be weeks to get it resolved. Going to delay starting this session -1 and everything after for a couple weeks.

That works for me. Iā€™m still stuck in my usual character creation analysis paralysis loop.

OK sounds good. I think I know what I want to play but I havenā€™t done Starfinder before so giving me more time to read the stuff is good.

Well Iā€™m good to go with Maelchi Van Tennjic.

Jason Chase is Good to Go. Only thing he needs to know is what position on the freighter he is being brought on for so he can go get the XXX for Dummies for that position.

We donā€™t need to know what kind of XXXtreme porn for Dummies Jason Chase is gonna be bringing :smirk:

Hmmpphhh then see if he leaves reading materials in the privies for the rest of you thenā€¦

Walks away carrying somethign rolled up under his armā€¦

Ok well thatā€™s good in a way. Gives me a little more time to think through my build a little more. Thinking though a Ysoki Mechanic build. Thinking of a skill monkey, mr fix-it type, may even perhaps have a few dark secrets hidden away in those tool pouches.

Well at least I can fit in some Starfinder Society games on those days until we start up again. Got my Soldier to lvl 3 and got enough SFS achievement points to unlock the Vlaka race so now I have a Vlaka Envoy Iā€™m starting in SFS.

Tell me how that goes. I was thinking of doing it for down times, Got my Piezo number and such. But havenā€™t done anything about creating and registering a character for it.

I have played a bunch of SFS games already at various events online. So far the games have been pretty consistent in quality and on par with guild run games and games I have played with other GMā€™s. There are some differences from the regular campaign games we have been playing.

Each game is a one shot scenario and the one shots are mostly connected so to speak playing out over the story arc for each season. For the most part each scenario has itā€™s own story/quest lines that stand on their own, but sometimes reference stuff from past season story arcs. The story arcs are up to season 4 now, but you can play any of them out of order as long as your character is the appropriate level.

You donā€™t get xp in quite the way as regular play. Instead of x# of thousands of experience for each level, it takes 3 xp to lvl up and you get 1 xp per session. Since each session is a one shot scenario, it is always scheduled in a time period to finish it in one time slot/game session. I feel like the leveling pace is not much different from regular campaign play, maybe a bit quicker in the mid levels depending on how often you can find a SFS game.

You donā€™t get loot per say in the same sense as campaign/non SFS games. Youā€™re group can find loot in the sessions, but you donā€™t get to keep it at the end of the session. You can use it during the session. At the end of the session the loot found is added to your Chronicle sheet and it is available for you to purchase. The counter to that is I feel like you get credits more steadily as you are always awarded credits at the end of the session. I have been getting about an average of 800 credits per session. Depending on the difficulty of the session and the amount of goals the party completes during the session can vary how many credits you get at the end.

The GM fills out a Chronicle Sheet after the session, this is what is recorded with Paizo Organized play. It has a synopsis of how the party did and there are certain objectives the group must satisfy for a successful completion (as well as your character surviving the session). So far I havenā€™t been anywhere near worried about not surviving with my Soldier, weā€™ll see how that goes playing my Envoy. There are some objectives that wonā€™t negate a success if you donā€™t achieve them, but you will get less credits.

You get rep for your faction from each session and achievement points. The achievement points are used to purchase boons for characters from the organized play site. Thereā€™s a lot of boons and many of them are to unlock races from the Alien Archives as a lot of them are restricted without the a boon to unlock that race, such as I got for Vlaka. The allowable content race-wise is pretty much restricted to the Core Rulebook and a selection from the first Alien Archive book. There are gear useage restrictions to. You can only use stuff 1 lvl above you and that is from the core rulebook only. You can only use stuff from the other books allowed like Character Operatioins Manual and Armory at the same lvl. The exception to this is that any loot your group finds that is recorded on any of your Chronicle sheets can be used at lvl +2.

Some advice for getting started with Starfinder Society Play, definitely read download the Starfinder Society Guide 2.0 from the Paizo site and read it over good. Also definitely check out the Character Options page of the Starfinder Organized Play section on the Paizo site for errata on what is allowable per sourcebook.

The big problem: finding Stafinder Society games. The solution: Warhorn gaming site. https://warhorn.net/ I have found all the SFS games I have played so far via the Warhorn site. You look for the conventions and events that have online games. I have played 8 games in the last 5 weeks. Iā€™ll be playing two or three more this week.

So Iā€™m down to two-ish character ideas - both of them are Drow. (cue @Rando rolling his eyes )

Drow #1 is a male Technomancer with Grifter theme. He is slight of build, even for a Drow - definitely the runt of the litter, so to speak. Heā€™s been an underdog his entire life and was brutally tormented by his peers growing up on Apostae. Heā€™s very clever and somehow managed to become an unsanctioned male spellcaster on Apostae right under the noses of the nobles. Heā€™s generally charming and affable but he has a volatile temperament - especially when he thinks heā€™s being bullied or disrespected. Heā€™s a new hire and has spent the past several weeks deadheading around the pact worlds. None of the proles at EJ seem to understand what he actually does around there but management is really impressed.

Drow #2 is a female witchwarper with corporate agent theme. She fancies herself as being in charge of things, but otherwise is pretty chill. For some reason her career at EJ hasnā€™t worked out the way she expected despite routinely putting in 70+ hour weeks. She is a workaholic and a perfectionist and a bit of a micromanager but generally pretty agreeable to be around.
