I have played a bunch of SFS games already at various events online. So far the games have been pretty consistent in quality and on par with guild run games and games I have played with other GMās. There are some differences from the regular campaign games we have been playing.
Each game is a one shot scenario and the one shots are mostly connected so to speak playing out over the story arc for each season. For the most part each scenario has itās own story/quest lines that stand on their own, but sometimes reference stuff from past season story arcs. The story arcs are up to season 4 now, but you can play any of them out of order as long as your character is the appropriate level.
You donāt get xp in quite the way as regular play. Instead of x# of thousands of experience for each level, it takes 3 xp to lvl up and you get 1 xp per session. Since each session is a one shot scenario, it is always scheduled in a time period to finish it in one time slot/game session. I feel like the leveling pace is not much different from regular campaign play, maybe a bit quicker in the mid levels depending on how often you can find a SFS game.
You donāt get loot per say in the same sense as campaign/non SFS games. Youāre group can find loot in the sessions, but you donāt get to keep it at the end of the session. You can use it during the session. At the end of the session the loot found is added to your Chronicle sheet and it is available for you to purchase. The counter to that is I feel like you get credits more steadily as you are always awarded credits at the end of the session. I have been getting about an average of 800 credits per session. Depending on the difficulty of the session and the amount of goals the party completes during the session can vary how many credits you get at the end.
The GM fills out a Chronicle Sheet after the session, this is what is recorded with Paizo Organized play. It has a synopsis of how the party did and there are certain objectives the group must satisfy for a successful completion (as well as your character surviving the session). So far I havenāt been anywhere near worried about not surviving with my Soldier, weāll see how that goes playing my Envoy. There are some objectives that wonāt negate a success if you donāt achieve them, but you will get less credits.
You get rep for your faction from each session and achievement points. The achievement points are used to purchase boons for characters from the organized play site. Thereās a lot of boons and many of them are to unlock races from the Alien Archives as a lot of them are restricted without the a boon to unlock that race, such as I got for Vlaka. The allowable content race-wise is pretty much restricted to the Core Rulebook and a selection from the first Alien Archive book. There are gear useage restrictions to. You can only use stuff 1 lvl above you and that is from the core rulebook only. You can only use stuff from the other books allowed like Character Operatioins Manual and Armory at the same lvl. The exception to this is that any loot your group finds that is recorded on any of your Chronicle sheets can be used at lvl +2.
Some advice for getting started with Starfinder Society Play, definitely read download the Starfinder Society Guide 2.0 from the Paizo site and read it over good. Also definitely check out the Character Options page of the Starfinder Organized Play section on the Paizo site for errata on what is allowable per sourcebook.
The big problem: finding Stafinder Society games. The solution: Warhorn gaming site. https://warhorn.net/ I have found all the SFS games I have played so far via the Warhorn site. You look for the conventions and events that have online games. I have played 8 games in the last 5 weeks. Iāll be playing two or three more this week.
