Technically its possible to do this in real life today. Using a stream of high energy particles, you could conceivably strip away all the electrons orbiting the nucleus of any atom. The problem would be the sudden and probably nuclear release of energy that holds those particles together. I mean who really wants that earth-shattering kaboom?
