I saw no way to contact admin about this so am posting here in hopes someone who is admin grade can see this.
I was contacted by Nasdeq on Steam about his concern that Vowels from steam may have had his account hacked. Nasdeq says he got a suspicious message from Vowels via Steam with a web link to vote for something that looked very suspicious.
Nasdeq informed me he is unable to access these OTG forums anymore since I guess he hasn’t been on since Covid days.
He also informed me he messaged Gregor on Steam about this as well ( mean the possibly hacked Vowels account did)
So , Just a heads up and if others can be alerted about this potential issue that would be good.
I again, sorry if in totally wrong forum but I looked ALL over and see no way to contact any OTG admin listed in areas I looked, and I spent some minutes looking.
This forum is fine, but I think this will get a bit more traction in off-topic. I’m not sure how many watch feedback & suggestions. @Blastie , I think, maintains the Steam group, so tagging her here. I don’t see that we have a member named Nasdeq, or a Gregor, but I made an attempt to flag @Vowels on Discord as well. Thanks for the heads up.
We have a “Gregor,” although I’m not sure of the spelling. I used to play with him in our group, but I haven’t seen his hide or hair in maybe two years. Might have turned grey… not sure.
Not sure there is much they could do if they got into Vowel’s Discord or forum account. Maybe post phishing links or scams. But we can see if they post anything. Not sure about DMs though.
This actually appears to be a living and breathing scam on Steam ATM. I received three messages from various OTG members just yesterday wanting me to click on a link to help an e-sports team get into some event. Last week I got messages from even other OTG members to click on a link to get beta access to a game on Steam that currently is NOT giving out beta keys.
Be wary and vigilant all. The hackers are indeed out there and trying their best to hack into your accounts and steal your identities and account contents.. and probably plant stuff into your computers to add to their bot zombie throngs. What wonderful people..
The scam works like this: you receive a message from a steam friend with a link. You click the link, thus allowing them to hijack your account. They then send the link to all your friends list. Anyone who responds with “you’re a scammer” or questions it is blocked. Sometimes they remove everyone from your friends list. Then the cycle continues. Steam is usually able to get your account back if you contact Steam support.
But never ever click links like that. No “VOTE FOR ME” or “FREE PLAYTEST HERE IS THE LINK” type things ever. Never. Ever.
Huh. Now that makes me wonder if something from last weekend was related. It was a different OTG member (not sure of the forum name at this point, if I ever knew it), but I got a couple of Steam messages from someone on my friends list and I did not respond right away because I didn’t recognize the sound … figured it was some tone in FFXIV that I didn’t recognize. Didn’t realize it was Steam messages until I logged out of the game.
There was no link, just something about “can you help, please answer”.
Next day, that person completely disappeared from my Steam friends list.
This was likely a scammer that got hold of your friend’s account. Another popular scam/hack is to send a message asking you to vote for them for something. Originally it was mostly CS:GO but evolved to include different things, including one that says “Join me in this playtest”. The links sometimes even look legitimate. But they’re not and if you click them you give the hackers access to YOUR account.
(In one of my Steam groups we track this stuff so our members can stay safe.)
Um, thanks for everyone that contacted me, so I could fix my account. Today, I got messaged by KCina…in french, I think. If anyone knows him, please get word to him that he’s been hacked. I’m not even sure he is part of our forum community, but he is in OTG on Steam, I believe.
