In a bid to increase activity, STO is offering this free character until May 21. I will be keeping my eyes peeled for fleet invite requests 
I tried STO when it first came out but, for whatever reason, I didn’t stick with it.
I am interested in trying it again.
I have created an account, downloaded the game, started with the tutorial, but I cannot figure out how to claim this free character.
Any tips?
OOPS, never mind, once I logged back on, I could choose the new free character in addition to the new character I created.
I see I will have to start with the newbie character to learn how to get around in this game!
Glad you got going. It will take a little while before you can be invited into the guild as you have to progress a bit, you’ll get a choice to go KDF or Federation. Let me know then and I’ll invite.

you need to create a jem hadar and after the tutorial you character will be upgraded. At least that’s how I understood it.

I am still chugging along in STO and there is still a lot I don’t understand yet.
Recently, I obtained a little boiling/rock type pet (can’t remember where or how) and I purchased a Rainbow Moopsy pet during the Summer Event.
I added the abilities to summon each pet to my number 1 tray.
Some time later (I don’t know exactly when it happened) I noticed the tray icons for those 2 pets changed to some other 2 pets (different types of Tribbles).
And, the boiling/rock and Moopsy pets were no longer to be found in my inventory.
I don’t remember obtaining those Tribble pets and I certainly did not use them to replace the items in my tray.
Doe anyone know how this could have happened?
A bug in one of the recent patches perhaps?
You mean the Horta pet? It’s from the quest Mine Enemy. No idea what you are experiencing, sorry. Tribbles will reproduce, so they might have appeared in your hotbar in empty slots.
Yes, the Horta pet does look the boiling/rock pet I was referring to.
UPDATE: Never mind. I am an idiot. I know where my pets went!
