ok, I think I have decided to go with the Soldier, Bombard as it’s primary fighting style. And I think for flavor I will go with the space goblin as the race, cause it is easy to see them as a little crazy. Though to be honest I am digging the idea of something with multiple arms so I could potentially be carrying at the ready multiple grenades and a weapon.
To that extent I am thinking either Spathinae, or maybe even Skittermander - but I am having difficulty seeing the lil bit of crazy I want in those, or other races with multiple arms. Most of the multi-armed races are large, and relatively peaceful, so i am having difficulty envisioning them lobbing grenades and explosives willy nilly.
I reserve the right to swing back to something else still. The envoy is still calling me, though taking an Archetype looks like it would be bad for the envoy since they miss out on all their fun inspirations. So I no-longer have designs on that ship ownership Ryukan.
@Findywen just because the big 4 armed races are mostly peaceful doesn’t mean your character has to be confined to those societal norms. You could have a big 4 armed beastly race that embraces being big and beasty and soldiery.
I am really heavily considering playing the Dromada race I posted earlier as a a Ghost Operative with Ace Pilot theme. The Dromada evolved as basically being prey for every manner of predator on their planet and thus developed a herd instinct society that tends to be skittish, easily spooked and are generally timid beings. In fact the Dromada’s racial abilities play of of this. If I play this character I will be more of Dromada that resists his racial tendency to be a fearful timid creature and uses bravado, sarcasm and cockiness to compensate for this. He will use his racial abilities to his benefit and not give in to the weaknesses of his race i to try and show other Dromada that they can leave the homeworld and find a place among the other beings in the cosmos. Still he is always looking for others to group/bond with as a “herd” of sorts.
I say play what race you want and build the personality you want.
@Ryuken for sure. I dont always follow the mold. But I was also trying to avoid being large, it doesnt fit the image I have. Skittermander might actually be the direction I go rather than Goblin. Though I already have the basis for a goblins back story. Having a little fluff ball running through the halls with up to 6 grenades in hands would be quite entertaining.
Looking over the expenses of grenades however, I wonder if my character concept is going to be too expensive, and unable to really do what I want. Dropping multiple grenades in a combat is going to get REALLY expensive. To the point where it would be like buying a new weapon every combat, rather than just buying ammo. And yes the Bombard can make a homemade grenade with 10 mins of spare time, I wasn’t planning on just throwing 1, also the bombard gets bonuses for heavy weapons eventually too, but that wasn’t the image I was creating. Back to the drawing board i think, good thing we have a couple weeks till session 1
Sniper rifles. Fly speeds. Charging around the world. Tossing huge AE generating grenades. These are not the things to dream of.
This isn’t a map of a “dungeon” or a major encounter area, it’s just a single encounter. But that’s the map size. Cheesy or not, there’s a story explanation for why you are running into an encounter like this without having seen your possible targets before getting onto the map.
Im looking at a new direction as a Nuar Soldier with the primary fighting style of Hit N Run, or maybe Blitz. Ooh maybe with a pistol, and a Taclash, or some other form of crowd control effects.
Rando, im not sure why you think my character was lobbing grenades, he was going to hand them out like candy, then run gleefully in the opposite direction. But alas, that character has been replaced.
Since I’ll be able to use soul fusion with solar flare, I’m planning to max out Charisma on my Solarian. This will also allow me to make more frequent use of revelations via resolve points.
So, I’d like to put in my application for ship captain. I know Ryukan’s character won’t mind taking orders from a reprogrammed android .
(Also @Findywen, let me know if the envoy starts calling to you again. I don’t want to disrupt any plans you may have had there. So I’m happy to make some changes if needed.)
@Rando, dang yeah that is a really small map. As a Dromada, I could run across the entire map in one turn with the Bolt action and not have used up all the movement of the Bolt action.
The Freetrader idea is out the door, so ownership of the ship is not something I am concerned about, even if i go back to the envoy. So I will let you arm wrestle Ryukan for that crutch honor? ( no strikeout available, so i used the blur effect)
Just clarify. I don’t actually want to own the ship. Insurance on space winabagos these days is too expensive. I just want to point at the windshield and say “engage”.
so you want to be princess Vespa, I think that makes Mithinar your droid hand maiden Dot. Ryukan already said he is Barf. Being so short I think Mazzus has to be Dark Helmet , which leaves me as Lone Starr. If i did my math correct.
Does the “key ability score” of a class have any mechanical effect in the game? From what I can tell, it doesn’t…
Does the +1 ability score bonus for theme have any mechanical effect in the game? From what I can tell it doesn’t because you get a couple of ±2 bonuses from race, +1 from theme and 10 additional points to freely distribute. If I’ve got this right, this means you will always have at least 1 ability score of an odd number which grants no bonuses over the next highest even number. Moreover, the odd numbers will always converge to an even number at 18 as you level up. This makes my circuits overload.
It was “common” when Starfinder came out (not sure about the feelings about the community now) to take a single level of soldier at level one for any character who wanted to spend any sort of time in combat before progressing their main class.
That would give you:
a decent background to explain what you were doing before you became an adventurer
STR or DEX as your key stat to determine resolve points
a soldier combat style, including the popular Blitz or Sharpshoot
proficiency with most weapons and armors
At the cost of:
delaying access to “main” class stuff by one level
being forced to take Versatile Specialization at level 5 to make use of those weapon proficiencies with Weapon Specialization (class feat gained at level 3 in the main class); also missing out on weapon specialization for one level compared to single class characters
My character will remain pure solarian as that is what I feel is most appropriate for her thematically. The soldier dip might benefit others though.
Since my home brew theme is out, the next closest theme is probably either death touched or esper.
As far as her reason for adventuring, she’s just trying to leave the pact worlds to start a new life. So she has booked passage on the cheapest flight available. I trust that the reasons for her continued adventures after arriving at the colony will become clear in the fullness of time.
