[Finished] SF - Horizons of the Vast AP (Sundays, 8-11 EDT)

I’ma get you the book “How To Identify the Stool of Various Species…For Dummies” …that isn’t too many words in the title for Jason is it? :smirk:

I’m (mostly) kidding about operative. I watched @Findywen suffer with his trick attack rolls too many times and it has made me unsure whether I would enjoy that class. On paper though it definitely looks like the most powerful class. They can be very good, perhaps optimal in just about everything at least in terms of skills and this looks like a skill heavy, combat light type of campaign.

Oh I have a copy already from my sanitation engineering curriculum. No need for you to try to blunder around in a book store acting like you know what and where to look for it… I know you could never lower yourself with your mega skills to actually ask someone for help in finding it or anything else…I wouldn’t want you to embarrass your self and tarnish that fragile ego you have… I could never live with myself if that happened…

My ego is forged from the strength of my confidence, which for a Dromada is usually as solid as a weather worn wood fence. Looks solid, but lean to hard on it…

But I am not your run of the mill Dromada, I pride myself on not being a skittish puss Dromada. Now whether or not that holds up…that is a different story.

I think we are going to have a “great” crew…plenty of party “dynamics” going to be at play. I am sure I will be telling Jason “You missed a spot” an awful lot :smirk:

I’ve decided that Jason is not going to be a right fit with your character. So I’m dropping him as my character choice. He is a person on the run, who has been repeatedly in the recent past have had multiple assassination attempts on his life. He is looking for a low key exit from his current local.

He isn’t going to get that with a know it all Scooby Doo type character. So rather than put myself in the position of killing you in your sleep. I’m going to pass. And just come up with a different character and save Jason for a more serious campaign.

I’m glad it came up before we actually started. For now the Mine collapse is back up as a story hook choice for everyone.

I hope I didn’t offend you or something. I just thought we were having a bit of a good natured back and forth ribbing of sorts outside of the game. I wasn’t going to play my character as a total know it all arrogant outright like that. He’s confident and cocky, but it is a put on of sorts or a face to compensate for the skittishness and anxiety of his race’s traits. I wasn’t planning on harassing your character or anything.

I mean, my character has his own shady past. May or may not be hiding from certain law enforcement type individuals… :grimacing:

It has nothing to do with harassing. It was fine. Jason is not a nice person. Not anymore. He use to be. At this point, he took whatever position on the ship that would get him off this planet after the last attempt. He is going to pretend to be anything but what he was in the past. But if he feels someone is going to risk putting the spot light on him at any point. He will not hesitate to negate the risk of this happening. Even if it means arranging a horrific accident with a rogue meteorite that happened to puncture the hull in a room which unfortunately one of the crew was standing in that didn’t happen to have any space suits in it.

Like I said, Not a nice person. And wanting to stay in the shadows.

So Jason is just not going to be a good fit with any group that has someone who is a Hey Look at me type attitude and wants to draw attention to themselves to show how good they really are.

Its not a big deal. I’ll just shelve him for a different darker campaign.

So what I’m hearing in this conversation is that I a need pick a character that’s good at surviving with a bunch of sociopaths around.

Well that’s the thing, my character wasn’t going to be a hey look at me type character. I suppose I gave the wrong impression there in our back and forth. Maelchi is also keeping a low profile in a sense, he may come off as confident, sarcastic and cocky, but again it’s something of overcompensation so he’s not seen as another scared little Dromada. I wasn’t going to be calling out your character specifically or trying to draw any attention like that.

Heck, my character is a Ghost Operative. I try not to draw attention to myself doing Operative things as I sneak around. I make a sneaky Scout who can haul ass back to the group if spotted or spots danger and then give a good Dromada moan to “alert” everyone to danger for some initiative bonus.

This crew is starting to feel like the crew of the Discovery

Maelchi is not so much a sociopath as a scoundrel.

I’d suggest that you can pull together that kind of character, but if I’m reading Rando’s primer correctly, this is a “crew” who all have something in their past that they probably don’t want to draw too much attention to their presence because they are all “wanted” individuals for some reason or another. Some may be for back child support that they can’t afford (think Malcom/and Zoe), Perhaps they are skirting the legality of their occupation (such as the Han Solo type), others may be in a wanted dead-or-alive type situation (think River/Simon Tam). Others may be part of the group because they don’t have anything else better to do but appreciate the situation of the others (Think Wash and Jayne). Either way, they aren’t probably going to have wild “hey look at me” type personalities, unless that serves the mission at hand, and then they’d probably scurry back into the shadows as quickly as possible to keep from anyone getting to solid a bead on them hoping to collect whatever bounty is on their heads…“How do we eek out a living and try to pay-off/pay-back whatever it is that put us on the run in the first place” type of mentality.

That was sorta how I was picturing it when I came up with Jason and his personality. Pretty much Amos from The Expanse with no moral compass who is at the end of the line. But has someone actively out to kill him.

I was going into this aa group of individuals that are dumped on a ship, told go make money or else. And then they had to work out their differences and gel as a crew if it was possible. At the start we are not at the point of us against the world. Nothing has happened yet. That is why I was pushing people to just create a character they want to play and don’t worry about a class that the party needs a role filled.

The most we will have is an official get together gathering by our handler. Not really a bare our soul and binding type moment.

I imagined this as Jason being at the end of his rope, and maybe this would pull him back onto the road to finding his humanity beyond the need to survive until tomorrow. None of this was anything you all were going to be told up front other than Rando. That was my plan.

But he is hanging by a thread at this point and anything would push him over it. He will hide it. But he will act on it if he feels it threatens him in any way. He is pretty much too edgy for this group really. So again I will shelve him and bring him back in some other campaign or system better suited to the edge he is walking.

So I’ll just start over and come up with something new. Again, Whoever I come up with will be here to fill a role or two on a freighter. What they can or cannot do when not on the freighter will not matter as they will have no idea beyond the first trading run and what happens on it. I’ll build their future based entirely on what happens in the game. If that means I wind up in a multiclass character out the wazoo based on what has happened, then I’m fine with that.

Is that because he might kill one of the other PCs or he might do something to derail the story?

Yes to the PC killing. I mean he had already worked out the fatal meteorite accident scenario.
Would that derail the story probably. Could he derail it in other ways, Not sure ,since I haven’t looked at the adventure path other than the player guide rando linked for us.

If Ryu played his guy anywhere close to his posts in our back and forth, Jason wouldn’t bat an eye about arranging an accident. He would take the road of expediency rather than the moral path. He is a borderline sociopath. Did I have hope he could migrate away from that in the right environment and over the long term, yes. But Ryu’s character would be too much too soon for him to reach the point of getting onto the path of finding his lost connection to humanity. He would just be clearing an obstacle. But it would have made it that much harder for him re-find the connection. He needs a certain time period to move away from the Sociopath’s answer.

In the end I also refuse to ask/tell others how to play the character they want to. Ryu, came up with his guy for his own reasons. Just like I came up with mine. Since I know where it would have headed if like I said he played him anything like in our exchange, I decided to just change to a different character. He didn’t offend me or make me mad with our conversation. I didn’t quit and walk away. I didn’t start screaming at him. I just changed my mind about the type of character I will bring into the game when it starts. Not a big deal for me.

Well now I feel bad as I have ruined Mith’s character concept. I feel like my character killed his character in his sleep instead. But I guess that’s what happens when you mess with the space camel snail.

Don’t worry about it. I knew where it might wind up when I came up with him. So I did have other ideas swirling around. Not as many as Ocelot though. Smirk…

I got that part and the character has his own shady past. I can be a scoundrel (Han Solo) and still fit in that sociopath kind of thing. I guess somehow I have given the impression that the character is going to be the equivalent of running around doing cartwheels and screaming for attention and name dropping everywhere we go. The character isn’t going to be like that. The character may have his own thoughts about whether or not he is better at everything based on his own ego, but that doesn’t mean he’s gonna be going around being in everyone’s faces about it.

I’m totally cool with this.
