[Finished] Pathfinder (2.0) - Age of Ashes Adventure Path (Thurs 8-11 EDT)

Concerning thievery, is anyone going to be training that skill up very high? When Huulm takes the Fighter Dedication Feat at lvl 2, one of the things it grants is training in either Acrobatics or Athletics, but since I am trained in both already I get to pick a different skill. @Mithinar I could pick up Thievery if you wanted to skip it and pick up something else instead. I was thinking about picking up Diplomacy, but it is Charisma based and I won’t be raising Charisma at all so it’s not a good choice for me.

I actually just finished with a new build version for Rockie. I’m fine on taking Thievery. The skills I plan on improving are:
Nature --> Legendary - Wisdom based which I will be improving
Thieving --> Legendary - Dex based which I will be improving
Medicine --> Expert - Wis Based - But will be using Nature for my Treat Wounds action
Survival --> Master - Wisdom Based which I will be improving

And I’ll be at trained level in:
Acrobatics
Diplomacy
Religion

And I will have 3 Lore areas that will reach Legendary level.
Herbalism
Dragon Lore
A third I still have to decide on.

Mith

Sounds good to me. My skills will end up being

Athletics - Legendary (lvl 15). I want Cloud Jump. By the time I get Athletics to Legendary and get Cloud Jump I could be doing some crazy jumping crap straight out of a Kung Fu movie.
Stealth - Legendary (Lvl 17). Monk gonna monk, except when Monk is Ninja sneaking.
Medicine - Expert. For extra healing and stuff.
Acrobatics - Master, going for Kip Up. Also, there is no Legendary skill feat for Acrobatics.

Will be Trained in:
Survival
Society

Now I have to rethink my feats a bit as I am dropping Monastic Weaponry for Wolf Stance. Do I pick up Wolf Drag at some point after I get Wholeness of Body at lvl 6? My current skill feat progression past lvl 6 looks as such:

Lvl 8: Brawling Focus
Lvl 10: Ki Blast
Lvl 12: Meditative Focus
Lvl 14: Timeless Body
Lvl 16: Quivering Palm
Lvl 18: Diamond Fists or Meditative Wellspring

If I look to take Wolf Drag at lvl 6 or 8, do i get rid of Brawling Focus of Ki Strike. The only thing I see that I get from Brawling Focus is the critical specialization for unarmed attacks which fall under Brawling; the crit spec for that being a target has a chance to be slowed until the end of my next turn. Ki Blast gives me a decent AoE that I can pump up and bumps my Focus pool up to 2. I feel like Ki Blast is sounding better than Brawling Focus, but I can’t know for sure as I am not really sure how slow works or how useful it would be and also considering they can save against it. If I get rid of Ki Strike I really have no use for Mediative Focus at lvl 12 as I would only have 1 Focus Point from Wholeness of Body.

Is Wolf Drag worth picking up over Brawling Focus? It is only one attack for a two action cost, but it can do extra damage on a crit vs. Brawling Focus only getting a chance to slow on a crit and Wolf Drag can do the proning which synergizes well with the opportunity attacking. I think I answered my question there…I think.

On another note? If I don’t take Wolf Drag (most likely will) do I drop Brawling Focus in favor of either say Guarded Movement? Anyone have any thoughts on all that? CoughCortillaencough

I… have been called…

The Acrobatics legendary is sorta Cat Fall. Quick Squeeze and Nimble Crawl have upgraded benefits at Legendary, too.

Should probably ask @Rando how he is ruling on Cloud Jump and whether it lets you jump further than your movement speed, though that’s less of an issue for Monks.

Note that Wholeness of Body will bump your focus points up to 2, so Ki Blast will actually get you to 3. Also, are you raising WIS? Don’t forget Ki Blast uses a WIS-based DC. It also only ever reaches Master, and that at lv17 (Expert at lv7), so enemies will have a pretty good chance to make their save for half damage unless you are pumping WIS. That said, it’s about your only AoE option as a Monk, and it’s a very good one as long as you raise WIS (starting with a minimum of 14, I’d say).

You can’t get rid of Ki Strike if you plan to take the other ki spells. You have to have either that or Ki Rush since all the other ki spells have a prerequisite of already having at least one other ki spell. The slow from Brawling Focus basically just removes 1 action from the enemy’s next turn. It’s nice, but it’s also inconsistent since it only happens on crits. You’ve got enough ki spells you will end up with all 3 focus points even without Ki Blast, but Ki Blast is still your best AoE option as long as you have the WIS for it.

Yeah, I’d definitely take Wolf Drag over Brawling Focus. We may get other sources of Slow, too.

I’m a little conflicted on Timeless Body. The effects are really good… as long as you are fighting things that use poison or encounter a lot of disease. Maybe check with Rando if he can give you a hint there.

Guarded Movement isn’t bad if you pick it up low. You’ll have the movement to go around a lot of AoO ranges when they come up, but not all of them. At higher levels, I think there are better choices.

Can you please clarify how strict you will be on Goodberry’s target? Including both the original and errata’d versions at the bottom of this for reference. It looks to me like they were loosening the requirement of having berries around you, and I really don’t think the intention was to have this one focus spell, unlike any other, be unusable in cities, in caves, in the Darklands, in deserts, in arid areas, in most mountains, in most plains, in many farmlands, in places with berries growing but they aren’t ripe yet, during all of winter and a big chunk of other seasons, and on and on. It would be the only focus spell with such massive restrictions on its use.

Goodberry is a good out-of-combat healing power, but it’s not out of line with someone just using Medicine. Treat Wounds can be used every 10min on up to 4 targets simultaneously by 7th-level and removes the Wounded condition, and Medicine also gives Treat Disease, Treat Poison, and the Legendary Medic feat that lets you treat things like Doomed and Drained that normally require magic. There’s also Battle Medicine to consider.

Goodberry provides better healing for a single target and can be portioned out based on who needs it, but it provides less healing than Treat Wounds can when multiple people are injured. You also have to get the Refocus feat (available at 12th level) just to keep up with Treat Wounds on only 2-3 people at a time.

It also helps to look at Goodberry versus my Lay on Hands. Goodberry heals (on average) 7.5 per spell level, while Lay on Hands heals 6 per spell level. Goodberry can be spread out among targets and heals a little more, but Lay on Hands can be used in combat. They’re pretty even from that perspective, and Lay on Hands has no restrictions on its use at all.

I really don’t think Paizo intended Goodberry to only be usable in certain places and at certain times of the year. It looks to me like the berries it uses are meant to be mostly handwaved the same way material spell components are. Looking at the numbers (I’ll be happy to provide the spreadsheet I made to check them), it also doesn’t look unbalanced at all for Goodberry to be usable consistently.

Errata’d:

GOODBERRY FOCUS 1
UNCOMMON DRUID HEALING NECROMANCY
Cast [two-actions] somatic, verbal
Range touch; Targets 1 ripe berry
Duration 10 minutes
You imbue the target berry with the bounty of nature, turning it into a goodberry that can heal and sustain far beyond its normal capacity. A creature can eat the goodberry with an Interact action to regain 1d6+4 Hit Points. A berry not consumed during the duration withers away. Every six goodberries consumed gives as much nourishment as one square meal for a typical human.
Heightened (+1) You can target an additional berry. A creature can consume any number of goodberries from the same casting with a single Interact action.

Original:

GOODBERRY FOCUS 1
UNCOMMON DRUID HEALING NECROMANCY
Cast 1 hour (somatic, verbal)
Range touch; Targets 1 freshly picked berry
Duration 1 day
You imbue the target berry with the bounty of nature, allowing it to heal and sustain far beyond its normal capacity. A living creature that eats the berry with an Interact action gains as much nourishment as from a square meal for a typical human and regains 1d8+5 Hit Points. If it’s not consumed during the duration, or if you cast goodberry again, the berry withers away.
Heightened (+1) You can target an additional berry.

Can you tell I made that post at about 3am? hehe I meant Ki Blast and not Ki Strike. And I totally forgot that I had 1 Focus Point from Ki Strike already.

As for taking Ki Blast, by the time I take it (lvl 10) my Wisdom will be 16 at lvl 10, and 18 at lvl 15. I will pick up Wolf Drag over Brawling Focus.

Regarding TImeless Body, I just want to stay young forever :smirk:I can always pick something else at lvl 14, I’ll have to do some more thinking.

So I spent the past couple of days thinking some more about the game and I’ve come up with a different sorcerer concept that I think might work better for both me and the party as a whole. I say for me, because upon further reflection, the divine spell list (at least in its current state - maybe a future splat book will change that) just doesn’t offer the range of choices I would like for Emilie.

I don’t know where @Mithinar landed as far as Rockie’s class. I saw the update about druid followed by an update about cleric of sarenrae with a dedication into druid. I am assuming that Rockie will still be doing some heals, and that Huulm will be our dexterity based striker and Valk is continuing to be our strength/con based defender/tank with utility spells.

So… I came up with this concept after thinking deeply for the past couple of days… a more traditional sorcerer but still very interesting concept (at least I think so  )

Anna Wang grew up in the capital city of Isger. A couple of generations ago her ancestors had immigrated from Tian to pursue work on some of the ambitious construction projects then being performed. One of these was the Citadel Alterein. The Tian immigrants of the time had much experience with grand construction projects like these and were immediately welcomed although their standard of living was meager at best.

Anna’s grandparents struggled to make ends meet but lived for a vision of a better life for their children and ultimately they were able to send their first son to training academy for civil servants. Anna’s father continued this tradition of hard work and upward mobility and dutifully sent Anna’s brothers to the most expensive schools in Isger. Unfortunately, Anna wasn’t given the same opportunity and had to make her own way.

Having seen the oppressiveness of the hell knights first hand, she decided to embark on a career in law and the only way to do this was to take on considerable student debt. She has now been out of law school for about a year. During this time her hair began rapidly changing from black to silver. At first she thought it was the stress from her considerable financial burden but as this physical change coincided with the manifestation of magical powers she now realizes that a long dormant draconic bloodline has awakened in her.

Seeking to make some quick money to pay off her student loans, Anna has come to Breach Hill in search of adventure. As a draconic sorcerer of silver dragon bloodline, she favors spells that deal cold damage. Additionally she makes use of various enchantments when dealing with dangerous or unruly clients. Divination spells such as mind reading also come in handy in the courtroom as Hell Knight prosecutors have been known to conceal evidence favorable to the defense.

Anna believes her adventuring life is nothing more than a temporary detour and plans to return to practicing law once her loan is paid off. However, she has always been an idealistic and committed defender of the oppressed so there is no telling what she will ultimately decide to pursue.

I have one more small request to make regarding a change to my character. I thought I had Stealth trained, but I don’t. Can I swap out being trained in Intimidation for being trained in Stealth?

Hey, if we ever get taken to task for extensive murder hobo’in’, now we’ll have legal consul to represent us. :+1:

Everything’s looking good folks.

For the rules questions:

Cloud Jump: sure it sounds really cool to jump further than one’s move speed. Appropriate for a level 15 feat. The example given describes rolling a 20 and jumping 60 feet, but they never tell us what the move rate of the character doing that jump is. I’m assuming they have a “normal” move rate and the 60 feet jump breaks the normal jump distance rules.

Goodberry: Yep they loosened the restriction from “fresh” to “ripened”. I disagree however, they are intending for the spell to be difficult to cast in inappropriate environments because of the non-trivial material component. What makes Goodberry great is both pro-active healing (as opposed to the typical reactive healing) and it upsets action-economy and range restrictions, because the person being healed is independent of the druid who “cast” the heal. Essentially the druid is making mini healing potions that they can dole out ahead of time. It’s more appropriate to compare/contrast Goodberry with say the infused reagent elixirs made by an alchemist than comparing it to a typical healing spell. I can’t tell y’all how often it’s going to be a problem in the future, but if you are in a desert environment, or the darklands, or even most dungeons, then yes you are not going to find berries that day.

Familiar Gathering: (Mith asked this via PM). Sure, that sounds very flavourful for a leshy familiar (with the appropiate abilities - manual dexterity) to go out and gather berries. But as mentioned above in my blurb on Goodberry, if in an inappropriate environment, the leshy is going to come up empty handed. Furthermore it’d be a dick move for me to kill your familiar, but some places are going to be dangerous, and sending out your familiar alone is asking for trouble; not everywhere, but it could happen.

Swapping out Intimidation for Stealth: sure.

Lawyer in the party: Hmm… Q) What do you call 10,000 lawyers buried on the bottom of the ocean? A) A good start.

What do you call a lawyer who is a murder hobo in a group of murder hobos?

Aha, I don’t have to swap out a skill to exchange with Stealth, I can just pick up Stealth at lvl 2 when I take the Fighter Dedication at lvl 2.

Well now that I don’t need to swap a skill out for Stealth, I’m wondering if there isn’t a better skill for me to swap out Intimidation for to train. I mostly took Intimidation because it kinda fit with the whole half-orc thing, but it doesn’t necessarily fit with the monk thing. I’ll won’t be raising Charisma past 10 and I won’t be increasing Intimidation, all my skill increases will be going into Athletics, Acrobatics, Medicine and Stealth. I could pick up Nature or Religion just to help out with magic item identification as I’m sure those skills will be trained higher by some of you so I won’t be the primarily skill checker for those skills. Other than that I could train a skill no one is trained in to sorta cover that. Or I could just keep Intimidation for what it’s worth and use it in a sort of controlled, confident, passively aggressive Monk style.

Does anyone in the party have Society? It’s been coming up a lately…

@Rando, May I log into the server early tomorrow? Like maybe 7pm eastern time?

Maybe…
