I can smell chlorine in tap water.
Yep. Chlorine in tap water. And as a result, also in the coke you get from dispensers in your fast food restaurant. Or the ice cubes. And people were telling me quite seriously thatās not possible because they donāt smell anythingā¦
If you canāt then there are two options, either your area doesnāt chlorinate enough to be noticable, or more likely, youāve gotten so used to it that you donāt taste/smell it anymore.
And yes, Iām from an area where tap water does not get chlorinated, so it was very noticeable for me.
Boiling gets rid of chlorine. So if you take fountain drinks home and boil them before drinking, problem solved. Takes care of that pesky ice cube problem, too!
people who keep tropical fish have known this for years as they have had to remove the chlorine from tap water so as not to kill the fish.
yes soap or detergent works best washing up liquid is probably the most concentrated too. I did say this on my post here on march 14th
Quote
The virus is coated in an oily greasy coating to protect itself and alcohol based hand sanitisers will work, soap is even better which has seen a run on these products in the shops here. Washing up liquid is probably the best degreaser and cheapest effective cleaner available and is perfect for wiping down surfaces . The virus dies very quickly if the oily coating is removed.
Prevention is the best cure for this virus as the death rates for people admitted to intensive care are horrendous and thats before the beds are being overrun. It has come to the point here that the drās are having to choose which patients have the best chances of survival. as there are just not enough beds equipment or staff to go around. This is not like seasonal flu which killed 1760 in a year in the UK we lost 569 people today and it hasnāt peaked yet. Our government has failed this country totally and are to blame for a lot of this . however its probably too late to avoid now donāt have a heart attack they will just let you die at home now as there are no beds for you
Sorry Iām just so angry, a lot of this was avoidable
Love you all
I hope everyone is safe! Iām in Northern New Jersey and we are in lockdown mode. My wife, 25-year-old daughter and I are all working from home! Safe and looking forward to when this is all over and getting back to our old regular routineā¦as we all are. All this home time is making me want to retire so I can play PC games full time!
I went to the little grocer nearby today. I ran out of coffee⦠Coffee is āessential.ā I have a subscription with Amazon, but it hasnāt come and hasnāt shipped, soā¦
The store was 3 or 4 times as busy as usual - 5 or 6 people shoppingā¦
Looks like the BBQ place next door is doing about the same amount of business ⦠There was a pickup truck out front.
Figured Iād top up the gas tank while I was out. When the pump stopped, I thought it had glitched because there couldnāt have been enough in there. The price should have been much higher⦠Wow. Gas price is WAY down.
Please everyone, be safe. I wish you could all be hermitsā¦
Provincial state of emergency. Construction is essential and Iām bidding on jobs every day. Up early and out there. Pancakes still taste awesome, but was there any doubt⦠I have my kid calling āthe grandmasā daily and set the treadmill up in front of the bay window. Online school is gaining traction. Getting tired of shoveling the driveway⦠Damn you winter!! I want to cut grass⦠Re-playing old PC games has been a nice distraction.
Stay Well
I saw today that it has made it to my quiet little part of the world.
First reported case in my county Friday, second Saturday.
Now only a few counties in Georgia with no reported cases.
yeaā¦I noticed that. I keep wishing this was all a bad dreamā¦but, then I wake up and find its still out there.
We shall get through this. I am staying in except when I walk the dog. Our neighborhood is an older one with huge lots because of septic systems. Plenty of room for people to pass each other on the streets and wave at folks sitting on their front porches or on lawn chairs setup on their driveways about halfway down the drive from the street.
I found out all my neighbors were aware of my walking several times a day and comment on it saying Iām probably the most active one in the neighborhoodā¦which I am not sure of. Too many of them are really young and have children. We all know young children can keep you going no matter what.
Its quite a work out as I remember my boysā youthful enterprises. I certainly could not keep up with anyone these days except the dog. And she is only 14.5 poundsā¦and on a leash. I think the leash has a lot to do with that tho.
Heya good people.
Hope youāre all doing well during the shelter in place where you are.
Please be safe and not unwise during the warm days in the near future.
For my friends in the USA:
Iāve been working on number crunching for a few good folks after my last
consult had to call it, when things tarted to shut down. Itās for prediction
models; Longstoryshort the R0 is looking to be 5.7 or 5.8. So please be wise,
safe, stock up without hording. The little extra you get over the next few trips
will go a long way. Without the accurate testing and strong implementation
seen elsewhere, getting to the 82-85% needed for herd immunity. This it
going to be a marathon race. No blame. No politics. Just numbers and facts.
SARS-CoV-2 is tenacious and preys on our social and physical weaknesses.
This study will be published by the CDC in the next few days. Along with
the confirmation (and not just the existing press statement) that the national supply
dispensary of protective equipment is exhausted. Many of you here Iāve known
a very long time. You know what Iāve gone through to get here.
Take that into account when I state: This is serious. Please treat it as such.
Be careful. If you live in Chicago and need help, please reach out.
Anyone know of a place to order a few cloth masks? With so many scams out there and some orders taking over a month, Iām looking around my community for some recommendations.
I am in Idaho near the Washington border. At this time our county Kootenai has 42 cases and 0 deaths. But the state has 1210 cases and 15 deaths. But we have been on lock down for over two weeks now. Been making masks for the hospitals and emergency workers and friends and family. Out of elastic now. But our local quilting shops are supply us with materials when it comes available. I have it down now, I can make a mask in fifteen minutes. Also been making hand sanitizer but like elastic, I am out of rubbing alcohol. My prayers go to everyone and my hopes we all get through this. Hugs from six feet away.
Friend of mine recommended this site on Facebook:
No personal experience with them, yet.
wow⦠that is huge. We are staying in place and checking the few folk that come to the motel in through the window - table outside for them. We Lysol the air and furnishings at least 3 hours after they leave, then the room sits for at least 24 hours before itās stripped and disinfected for the next guest.
I watched a cool laser demonstration of microdroplets on youtube yesterday⦠probably explains the R0.
I am readyā¦better than I thought yesterday. After reading about the masks, I started searching my boxes of clay studio supplies and guess what I found. Yep, not one, but two respirators (of varying degrees of efficacy), but I have a choice.
One was still in its original package and never opened (the gray one on left in image). The other I had used once before storing it away so its been used, but years ago so its safe to use at least once before disinfecting. I plan to use a coffee filter inside the face pieces as a precaution for an added layer, which can be discarded immediately after use. I have a pile of coffee filters and so far, my store has not run out of those commodities yet.
I have been looking at the quick and easy cloth folded ones with hair ties, but I do not have any materials available to make those. Iāll dig around and see if I can find some older T-Shirts that are thicker and cleanā¦but Iāll still need the ties. I have those twist ties that come in the garbage bag boxes that I can use to make the metal requirement for over the nose and found a few paper clips that can be used in a pinch. (so wished I still had my sewing machine)
Note: I also found a very old respirator thatās a cross between the two types in this image. It predated both and I actually used it so much that its rubber is starting to shed so wonāt be using that one.
Anyway, here is what I do have on hand and ready for use:
ā¦I shall forego my goggles that I used when I did my kiln firingā¦my son thinks that might be a bit much.

Giving them a try, thanks!
IC cases are going down, deaths are stable, seems weāve managed to āflatten the curveā in the Netherlands, at least.
There are still beds left over, so we should be fine for the next year. Most people appear to realize that this is necessary to avoid more deaths, though.
I have seen several youtubes on how to quickly make a mask⦠even the surgeon general has a video on it. Takes less than 2 minutes
Here in San Jose California ( Santa Clara County ) the citizens seem to be doing a good job staying home. Traffic has reduced by 60% , I still think thereās too many cars driving around but our population here has to be in the 100Kās , on my drive home for lunch I still see adults jumping the fence to the school football / soccerr field even thought thereās signs posted and the entryway is blocked.
My ebay business selling new + used clothing I can find from Goodwill is pretty much dead. At the worst of times I still cleared $100 bucks for my efforts and that bought groceries and gasoline.
Walmart and Costco both have an entryway and an exit into the store. Theyāve (Walmart) banned bringing in your own shopping bags which make sense. I work in the Kennelās boarding dept at my Vet hospital and Iāve had owners bring up dirty bowls that took 3 or 4 scrubbings before finally cutting through the grime to wash and have had dog / cat beds brought with food / blood on them. Once someone brought their 2 cats and cat beds that had fleas. That was fun sterilizing our cat ward.
Our Governor Gavin Newsom is doing a great job addressing us in California. Keeping us up to date with the effects staying at home has been having on the virus curve.
So thatās whatās happening from my observations in this area of the United States.
My brother thinks Iām paranoid. I even spray the soles of my shoes when I get back home.
